World Clean Up Day Ireland 2025
Every year on 20th September millions of people take part in World Clean Up Day. It is the biggest civic movement in history and it brings communities together across 191 countries. In Ireland the day is growing in scale and impact every year. At Oxigen Environmental we are proud to support this mission. We believe waste management should be simple, sustainable and community-driven.
This year's event is more than a clean up. It is about making Ireland a leader in sustainability and showing the world how small actions add up to big change.
Why World Clean Up Day Matters in Ireland
Ireland is known for its green landscapes, rivers and coasts. Yet litter and waste continue to threaten the environment. From single-use plastics to textile waste our ecosystems face daily pressure. World Clean Up Day is a chance to take action.
In 2024 over 20 million volunteers worldwide joined the movement. Ireland contributed by hosting hundreds of Clean Ups in cities, villages and coastal areas. The impact was seen in cleaner parks, safer beaches and stronger community bonds.
For Ireland the challenge is not just removing waste but changing behaviours. That means reducing landfill dependency, encouraging recycling and adopting circular economy principles.
2025 Theme: "Strive for Five"
This year's World Clean Up Day campaign is called "Strive for Five." The goal is ambitious yet simple: mobilise 5% of the global population for clean up action.
The 2025 spotlight is on textile waste. Clothing and fabric are among the fastest-growing waste streams in Ireland. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that thousands of tonnes of textile waste are generated every year. Most of this ends up in landfill even though much of it can be reused or recycled.
By focusing on textiles World Clean Up Day encourages communities to:
✔ Donate clothes instead of discarding them
✔ Embrace repair and reuse
✔ Support sustainable fashion in Ireland
✔ Reduce the environmental footprint of textile production
How Ireland Can Lead the Way
Clean up campaigns here often extend beyond litter collection. Local groups are tackling illegal dumping of plastic pollution and waste education. Schools, businesses and community groups are central to this movement.
Oxigen Environmental partners with local authorities and households to provide the infrastructure that makes these Clean Ups possible. From skip hire in Dublin and across Ireland to tailored waste management solutions for businesses we give people the tools to act.
By combining local Clean Ups with long-term waste reduction strategies we can move closer to Ireland's national sustainability goals.
The Role of Oxigen Environmental
At Oxigen Environmental we see ourselves as more than a waste collection company. We are a partner in building a cleaner Ireland. For World Clean Up Day 2025 we are encouraging households and businesses to take part in three key ways:
1. Join Local Clean Up Events
Across Ireland communities will be organising events on 20 September. Whether you live in Dublin Cork Galway or a rural village there will be opportunities to volunteer. Bring gloves, a reusable bag and help clear your area.
2. Manage Waste Responsibly
Use our skip hire services to handle larger Clean Ups. From community centres to schools our skips are ideal for bulky waste or large volumes. We ensure collected waste is processed responsibly and as much as possible is recycled.
3. Reduce Textile Waste
This year focus on clothing. Instead of sending textiles to landfill use donation points or bring them to charity shops. If items are damaged, repair them or repurpose them. Small steps reduce Ireland's textile footprint and support the global campaign theme.
Textile Waste in Ireland – The Hidden Problem
Textile waste is one of the least discussed but most urgent environmental issues. Fast fashion trends mean that people buy more clothing than ever before but wear them for shorter periods.
Research shows that in Ireland many households store unused clothing for years before discarding it. When these items reach landfill they take decades to decompose and release greenhouse gases. Synthetic fabrics shed microplastics which pollute rivers and oceans.
World Clean Up Day is the perfect moment to raise awareness about these challenges. Ireland can reduce textile waste through simple actions:
✔ Host community clothes swap events
✔ Teach repair skills in schools (sewing, stitching and patching)
✔ Promote second-hand fashion
✔ Support Irish businesses focused on sustainable textiles
