Bee-Friendly Waste Management: How Small Changes Support Biodiversity

World-Bee-DaY-Tips-to-Support-Biodiversity-1

Every year on May 20th the world celebrates one of nature's hardest-working heroes - the bee. World Bee Day is a powerful reminder that protecting the environment starts with the small things: the bees in our gardens, the bins on our streets and the choices we make every day.

Bees are responsible for pollinating over 75% of flowering plants and around one-third of the food we eat. No bees? No apples, strawberries or tomatoes. Their role in biodiversity and agriculture is irreplaceable. Bee populations are under serious threat from habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, pollution and waste mismanagement.

You might not immediately connect litter or poor recycling habits with declining bee populations but they are closely linked. Some issues affecting bees include

• Plastic pollution contaminants in soil and water, disrupting delicate ecosystems bees rely on

• Improper disposal of food and chemicals leading to toxic environments for all insects

• Urban waste and habitat degradation reducing the number of safe spaces where bees can forage and nest

There are some day-to-day steps you can take to help protect the bees:

• Use your dry recycling bins to their fullest potential, to reduce your household waste going to landfill; plastics, paper, aluminium and cardboard should go into your Oxigen green bin.

• Try your hand at composting at home - to save money and re-use for your organic waste. Organic waste that can't be used for compost can be put in your Oxigen brown bin.

• Litter gets swept into water sources and destroys plant and animal habitats. The area around our homes and streets are often littered with cigarette butts, food packets and wrapping. Picking up litter we come across and disposing of it correctly in our Oxigen black bin can go a long way in improving biodiversity. Reduce the use of harmful pesticides in your garden - maybe it's time to embrace the weeds and wildflowers? Take part in No Mow May to help our native wildlife thrive.

At Oxigen Environmental, we're in the business of waste, but we're also deeply invested in sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. This is reflected in our service offerings which include, bin and recycling waste collection, skip hire, street sweeping and litter picking.
